DEXA Scan in menopause
A DEXA scan (Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is the gold-standard test for measuring bone mineral density. Results are reported as a T-score (compared to healthy young women): above -1.0 is normal, -1.0 to -2.5 is osteopenia, and below -2.5 is osteoporosis. In Malaysia, government hospital rates should be confirmed directly with the facility and need a referral, while private cost is around RM200-400. Women aged 65 and above are advised to have routine screening, or earlier if they have high risk factors.
