Is ashwagandha safe with antidepressants?
Ashwagandha can be used with certain antidepressants cautiously, but you should discuss with your doctor first because there can be minor interactions. Ashwagandha mildly modulates serotonin and can add to the effect of certain antidepressants, though it rarely causes serious problems. Main risks: (1) Serotonin syndrome (very rare) - combining ashwagandha with certain high-dose antidepressants can spike serotonin too quickly. Signs: agitation, sweating, fast heart rate. (2) Additive sedation - both can cause drowsiness early in use. Most Malaysian women on certain low-dose antidepressants (paroxetine, escitalopram, sertraline) for menopause symptoms can safely add ashwagandha 300mg daily - start low, increase slowly, monitor mood/energy changes. Allow 4-6 weeks to assess. If you're taking ashwagandha for stress-driven insomnia, Sensoril (root+leaf, cortisol-focused) is more suitable than KSM-66 (energy-focused). For women with thyroid issues (especially hyperthyroid), ashwagandha can raise T4 - discuss with endocrinologist first. Always inform your obstetrics and gynaecology and psychiatrist about all supplements you take.
