Lubricant versus vaginal moisturizer - when to use which?
Both serve different purposes and many postmenopausal women need both. Lubricant - situational product used during intercourse or gynaecological exam to reduce immediate friction. Three types: (a) Water-based (KY Jelly, Astroglide) - latex-condom compatible, easy to clean, needs reapplication every 15-30 min. (b) Silicone-based (Pjur, Replens Silky Smooth) - lasts longer, non-absorbing, suitable for prolonged intercourse, latex-condom compatible. (c) Oil-based - NOT latex-condom compatible, can damage vaginal tissue with frequent use. Vaginal moisturizer (Replens, Hyalo Gyn) - product for long-term vaginal wall moisture. Used 2-3x weekly (not daily, not just before intercourse). Different mechanism from lubricant - moisturizer acts on vaginal tissue, binding water and providing 2-3 day moisture. Not for intercourse alone. For postmenopausal Malaysian women with genitourinary syndrome of menopause: (a) Start with vaginal moisturizer 2-3x weekly for moisture baseline. (b) Add lubricant during intercourse if needed. (c) If symptoms persist or worsen, local vaginal estrogen may be discussed as a targeted treatment option - discuss with obstetrics and gynaecology specialist. Replens and KY Jelly are available at pharmacies in Malaysia. Versions without animal ingredients are easier to verify as halal. No prescription needed.
