Quick Start

Quick Start Guide: Vaginal Dryness

5 steps to relief within 7-14 days

  1. 1

    Start a routine vaginal moisturizer

3 times weekly, usually at night. Not the same as lubricant - moisturizer is long-term tissue hydration.

  2. 2

    Add water-based lubricant for intercourse

Pick water-based or hyaluronic acid-based. Safe with condoms. Use plenty - no need to ration.

  3. 3

    Avoid harmful products

Vaseline can cause infections. Oils (coconut, baby oil) damage latex condoms. Scented soaps cause irritation.

  4. 4

    Hydrate from within

Drink 2 litres of water daily. Dehydration can worsen tissue dryness.

  5. 5

    Talk with your partner

Many women function better when their partner understands. This is biology, not a lack of interest.

When moisturizer + lubricant aren’t enough

If after 4-6 weeks you still have:

  • Pain during intercourse
  • Daily soreness
  • Recurrent UTIs

Then see an obstetrics and gynaecology specialist. Local vaginal estrogen may help selected patients after clinician review. Systemic absorption is usually low compared with oral hormone therapy, but suitability still depends on personal history and current medicines.

Options include vaginal cream, tablet, or ring. Cost in Malaysia is around RM50-150 per month for cream.

Common mistakes that slow results

  • Using lubricant only for daily dryness - a scheduled vaginal moisturiser (not just during intimacy) suits daily dryness better.
  • Choosing flavoured or alcohol-based products - these can irritate; pick gentle, pH-appropriate ones.
  • Stopping after a few days - moisturisers need consistent use to work.
  • Thinking scented soap “cleans” the area - it actually worsens dryness; warm water is enough.
  • Feeling too shy to raise it with a doctor - local vaginal estrogen is effective and can be discussed privately.
  • Douching (washing inside the vagina with liquid) - it damages the natural bacterial balance and worsens dryness.
