Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI) in menopause
Synonyms: premature menopause, primary ovarian insufficiency
Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) is the condition where the ovaries stop functioning before age 40. It differs from normal menopause because it happens too early, causing long-term estrogen deficiency that requires hormone replacement therapy to prevent complications like early-onset osteoporosis and heart disease. Causes include autoimmune conditions, genetics (Turner, Fragile X), chemotherapy, and ovarian surgery.
